IT’S BEEN two years since Allen’s confectionary copped a spray from lolly lovers across the country for killing the beloved Green Frog.
Citing the treat as unpopular among consumers, Nestle said people “weren’t buying” the product, and so decided to end production.
“We have streamlined the portfolio, deleting Spearmint Leaves and Green Frogs because they weren’t popular and sales had been slowing dropping off over time,” a spokesman for Allen’s said.
“We were selling one Green Frog to every 10 Red Frogs.”
But how the tables have now turned.
From today, Allen’s will not only be resurrecting the green frog — but other colour variations will join the frog family as well.
Along with the raspberry and lime flavoured frogs, the confectionary brand will also release two new colours in yellow (pineapple) and orange (orange).
Over the Christmas period last year, Allen’s launched a pop-up bar where shoppers had the opportunity to stock up on their favourite treats. The success of the trial resulted in Allen’s executives making the call to have reintroduce the green frog back on to supermarket shelves in a mixed bag, called Frog Family.
“Last year, Green Frogs made a special appearance at the Allen’s Lolly Bar in Sydney, and were a smash hit, selling out in just three days” Nestlé Head of Confectionery Marketing, Anna Stewart, said in a statement.
The new mixed frog bags will be available from Wednesday across the country in Coles, IGA and selected independent supermarkets.
