2004 TOURNAMENT STATE FINALS RESULTS
VALPARAISO CAPTURES BOYS SOCCER CROWN
Valparaiso High School took home the championship trophy in the 2004 IHSAA Boys Soccer Championships conducted Saturday, October 30 at Kuntz Stadium in Indianapolis. For the Vikings it was their first-ever boys soccer title as they defeated East Central 4-0.
Valparaiso had a pair of goals from Cameron Williams (12) and Patrick Rickman (11) as they rolled to a 22-0-2 record and the No. 1 ranking for the season. Scott Wolf (12) had two assists for the winners, while Zachary Henson (12) added his name to the assist column.
East Central finished the season at 21-2-1 and had advanced to the finals with a 2-1 victory over Indianapolis Cathedral. Valparaiso enter state finals action after a 2-1 (o.t.) win over Fort Wayne Canterbury earlier in the day.
RYAN TUNIS OF F.W. CANTERBURY WINS MENTAL ATTITUDE AWARD
Ryan Tunis of Fort Wayne Canterbury was named winner of the 2004 C. Eugene Cato Mental Attitude Award following Saturdays state championship action. The recipient of the award, who was nominated by his principal and coach, must excel in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability in soccer.
Ryan ranks No. 2 in his class of 62 and has earned the schools Highest Achievement Award. He will attend Wake Forest University to major in History. His other honors include the Wabash College Book Award, Academic All-State in 2003 and 2004, Model U.N. Dayton and Hope College Most Outstanding Delegate.
His volunteer work includes Habitat for Humanity, Community Harvest foot Bank, Science Central volunteer and Canterbury Soccer Camp staff volunteer.
Athletically, Ryan was a freshman member of the 2001 Cavaliers soccer state championship team, as well as the 2002 state runner-up squad. He is also a member of the school basketball and golf teams.
Ryan is the son of Katie and Jim Tunis of Fort Wayne.
Farm Bureau Insurance, the IHSAA corporate sponsor, presented a $1,000.00 scholarship check to Fort Wayne Canterbury High School in the name of Ryan Tunis.
